Let me start by saying congratulations to Youtube. A platform for video contents that had its humble beginning in 2005 and has since grown beyond what anyone may have thought possible. A place for videos on a plethora of topics where people of all backgrounds can come to find something they can enjoy feasting their eyes upon. It truly is amazing.
And yet, how can you be so petty and so lazy you damn fools. I bared witness to YouTube Rewind 2019 and it sparked a fire in me like no other, not even the previous year's attempt at a proper Rewind. For over five minutes we were forced to watch the creative department over at YouTube throw in the towel and attempt to pass of this hot pile of garbage off as a proper piece of content.
For those who may not know, last year's YouTube Rewind was considered so horrid and unbearable that the entire online community came together to make it the most dislike video ever. That's correct; a video by YouTube meant to highlight the best of that year's content was so hated that people actually went ahead and watched it just to hit that dislike button. And if we're being honest, it's fair. The video didn't highlight what people saw as highlights of the year, and instead highlighted "themes" and content that had a lot of views but wasn't culturally significant. But that's old news; we're here to focus on this year's atrocity.
They start of by saying "In 2018 we made something you didn't like. So in 2019 let's see what you DID like. Because you're better at this". They then go ahead and show clips from the most liked videos and creators in a number of different content categories. That's it really. They highlight some new creators, some creators that became big this year, and some miscellaneous records. That's all folks. That's where they end the video.
I put some thought into this, and I decided why I'm so annoyed. It's not with the video itself, as I suppose there's nothing wrong with seeing all of the things people have been seeing in 2019. And I suppose with so much content on this platform I can't get mad if there isn't something in this video for everyone. But what I can get mad at is the way YouTube put this video out for the world to see. The attitude is just so petty in my eyes. They failed once, and it was a big failure, but they failed once and it's like they gave up and blamed us. The public will not always be on your side. We aren't going to like stuff just because it might have people we like in it, nor because we like the creator that put it out. Hell we made an egg the most liked picture on Instagram once, you think we all love eggs?
We like seeing things we want to see. And then we didn't want to see an egg reach the top, we wanted to see the Kardashians go down. After 2018, the YouTube community was full of suggestions (in between the hate) of how YouTube could improve. But instead of listening to its community, YouTube just collected some statistics, pulled film from those videos, and made a Watch Mojo type compilation. And then said that's what we wanted to see. Learn YouTube. And quite frankly every creator out there. We aren't going to like things just because you put it out. We like what we want, and it's up to you to learn from that. Or don't. Maybe you can become the next most disliked video on YouTube.
