Recently I listened to an episode of Conan O'Brian's podcast that featured Will Ferrell as the guest star. I want to start of by saying I adore both comedians, and I especially enjoy O'Brian's work in particular as this podcast has in fact brought me a lot of joy and inspiration even. But to get back on track, in the episode the two began talking about comedy critics and that moment when a critic decides a comedy is too bad because it is "juvenile, not creative, and the death of what comedy should be". To which I have to say, so what?
So what if a comedy is juvenile and makes jokes using childish pranks and insults coupled with vulgar language instead of witty quips and meta comedic bits? Don't tell me its any less funny as a movie, or show, or whatever really. It's obviously different, but to say that its straight up not funny just because its childish? Like come on man, I think its you who has to grow up. Something being intellectual does not mean that it is automatically good, just as something being juvenile does not immediately earn it a poor status. Everything in entertainment has its place in this world and must be judged on its own merits, and if its funny, its funny. I am frankly tired of hearing about "real comedy" and how it has to make the audience work to get the joke, and anything simple is just looking for attention. So what!? Everyone wants attention, without it they wont make money. And comedy is comedy, doesn't matter how it's being delivered.
I figure that all I've really done on this blog so far is complain and I really am beginning to realize how heavily my creative side relies on that anger. So I want to take just a little bit of space to sing some praises and talk about things I enjoy. If you were to ask me about my favorite comedian, I don't think I could give you a straight answer. In my own opinion, each comedian has their place in their separate comedic genres. When it comes to podcasts, the funniest is honestly Bill Burr with Conan coming in a very second close. Conan is the funniest late night talk show host in my eyes, while my favorite stand up comic has changed over the years. A few years ago I would have said Kevin Hart because the man really knows how to tell a story and circle around on the bit. Since then, I've particularly enjoyed the works of Bo Burnham, Fluffy, Vir Das, Kenny Sebastian, and Anthony Jeselnik. What I am trying to say is that I truly enjoy comedy in its many forms and I will never get enough of it. And as long as I keep laughing, I honestly don't mind how they do it.
